artist biography

For more than 35 years, the American artist Cindy Sherman (b. 1954) has created provocative and inventive photographic works that have transformed the way in which images are read and understood. One of today’s most celebrated artists, Sherman has had solo exhibitions at numerous major institutions including The Broad, Los Angeles (2016); The Museum of Modern Art, New York (2012); San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (2012); Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (2012); Galerie nationale du Jeu de Paume, Paris (2006); and Serpentine Gallery, London (2003). Her work has been included in major group shows and biennials such as A Bigger Splash: Painting After Performance, Tate Modern, London (2012); Regarding Warhol: Sixty Artists, Fifty Years, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (2012); ILLUMInations, 54th Venice Biennale (2011); 10,000 Lives, Gwangju Biennale, South Korea (2010); and The Pictures Generation: 1974-1984, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (2009). In 2016 she was awarded the Praemium Imperiale International Arts Award by the Japan Art Association.
