lot description

In 2015, Levine photographed His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama for his 80th birthday. His Holiness, who rarely agrees to formal portraits, did so in aid of earthquake victims in Nepal. The process used 3D light technology, akin to Levine’s famed portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II entitled Lightness of Being in 2012.

artist biography

Chris Levine is a pioneer in the field of light art, creating and adapting technology in the pursuit of expansive visual sensations through work that has been referred to as transformational. Levine’s innovative practice is distinguished by collaboration and cross-fertilization. Incorporating numerous mediums, such as laser, photography and holography, across music, performance, installation, fashion, and design, his creativity is manifested in a multitude of projects. The artist attributes much of his inspiration to his practice of meditation, and his work has a spiritual dimension that often defies categorization. Since graduating from Chelsea and Saint Martin’s School of Art in London in 1980s, Levine has continued to explore the properties of laser light - the purest form of light available to man - and has developed a distinctive language that is both modern and highly original. Levine’s work is immersive and by extension transformative, often focused on a collective experience that enhances awareness of the present moment and our connectedness to one another.
