Forecast, the title of this photo edition, is a play on both the science of meteorology, and, in the broader sense, on the world’s fisheries, which are facing an uncertain future. A humdrum object, specifically a net cast by an invisible hand onto an expanse of water, serves Allora & Calzadilla as a political metaphor which they then transform into a poetic image.
Jennifer Allora (born 1974 in Philadelphia) and Guillermo Calzadilla (born 1972 in Havanna) have been working together since 1995. Now based in Puerto Rico, the artist duo engage with cultural, historical, and geopolitical subjects in interdisciplinary projects with a strong focus on artistic inquiry. They do not restrict themselves to any one medium, but on the contrary work with sculpture, film, photography, and installations in equal measure.
Allora & Calzadilla have taken part in major exhibitions in Mexico, South America, Europe, Asia and the United States. They represented the United States at the 2011 Venice Biennale and presented a work at dOCUMENTA 2012 in Kassel.
