Food is a factor in this lot as well: The highest bidder here will be given the exclusive opportunity to acquire the Dining Room’s golden wall and with it a piece of Tiravanija’s installation at this year’s Summer Night’s Gala.
The text is a quote from George Orwell’s dystopian fable, Animal Farm. Viewed in the context of the theme of today’s event, the quotation from Orwell, and the synthesis of humans with notoriously voracious pigs that it implies, is also an allusion to the third circle of hell in the Divine Comedy, which is where Dante encounters the souls of the gluttons.
The direct involvement of the viewer is a hallmark of many of Rirkrit Tiravanija's (born 1961 in Buenos Aires) works. Throughout his oeuvre, sharing food functions as a catalyst for collective experience—as in his early works of the 1990s, when Tiravanija actually cooked meals for gallery visitors.
