lot description

Over a period of several decades, Ernst Beyeler, using the pseudonym Ernst Paul, painted numerous watercolours inspired by both art and nature. For him it was a way of taking a break from his busy working life as a successful art dealer. The staff of the Galerie Beyeler on several occasions organised exhibitions in which Beyeler’s own watercolours went on show. After seeing an exhibition of Kandinsky’s watercolours on the Greek island of Andros in the late 1980s, Beyeler began producing some increasingly abstract watercolours of his own.
